Typhoon Taipei

2006 > Taiwan

Rain, rain, go away and come back some other day

sun, please
Another wet commute
out race puddles
Unbrellas don’t help
It’s my last day in Taipei and I can’t wait to leave. It’s not that I dislike the Japan with Chinese characteristics culture or the constant rejections by the Computex Sales Girl Soft Porn, it’s the constant, never-ending, tropical-storm strength torrential rains that are getting to me. I am tired of Typhoon Taipei

Yes, I know, this isn’t a real typhoon, and I don’t mean to make light of the real danger a typhoon brings, Hurricane Frances f’ing up my weekend two years ago, but the rains remind me of one.

Every day, all day the skies cascade water down on us, and not a spring mist. Driving hard, white rain with drops so large and fat they beat down umbrellas, overwhelm windshield wipers, and generally make me feel more like a fish than a man.

All the rain makes the whole town damp too. Every wisp of fresh air is more water than oxygen, permeating clothes, limping paper, and making water condensate on any cool item, from eyeglasses to camera lenses to every drink I ordered.

I really wanted to Super Size the carpet sucker the Holiday Inn Asiaworld staff used to dry the carpet around the numerous leaks in the funky building’s design, and put on over Taipei, drying out the city for at least one day.

While I am sure the many parks and green spaces need the drink, and generally everyone in Taipei adapted to it easily, I wanted my sunshire, not Typhoon Taipei.

I just hope there is sun in Manila.
